Description

Vestfold Symfoniorkester celebrates its 60th anniversary with a grand gala concert. We have put together a cavalcade of music in many genres: classical, romantic, modern, ballet, musicals and film. This time everything is in purely symphonic dress, where the orchestra and its musicians get to shine. We open with the well-known Fanfare For The Common Man by Aaron Copland. This is a work for brass and percussion and is a tribute to the common people's war effort during the Second World War. Then our strings get to flourish in the elegant and lively first movement of Tchaikovsky's Serenade for Strings. One of the evening's main works is Johan Halvorsen's Norwegian Rhapsody No. 1. Here he uses well-known Norwegian melodies together with his own themes and, with his masterly orchestration, creates a work that is typically Norwegian, but in a symphonic dress inspired by the late-Romantic idiom of its day. The romantic and passionate Intermezzo from the opera Manon Lescaut by Giacomo Puccini is perhaps the best-known instrumental piece from his operas. Then dancers from Spotlight Dansestudio enter the stage and take us into the world of fairy-tale ballet with a short excerpt from Swan Lake. Norwegian film music has made an ever greater mark internationally, well deserved. We have picked out a theme from a somewhat older film, namely Orion's Belt and the well-known Svalbard theme. We continue with Princess Leia's Theme, composed by one of the superstars of film music, John Williams, for the film Star Wars. The Montagues and Capulets by Sergei Prokofiev from his ballet music for Romeo & Juliet has one of music history's most striking themes. The dancers also take part in this dramatic piece. After the interval we open with the overture to The Force of Destiny (La Forza del Destino) by Giuseppe Verdi. Then you can lean back in your seats again and muse to the beautiful and mysterious Nimrod from the Enigma Variations by Edward Elgar. Another of the great film composers, Ennio Morricone, composed together with his son Andrea the beautiful and melancholic Love Theme for the film Cinema Paradiso. Here in an exquisite arrangement by Angela Morley that was used in Itzhak Perlman and John Williams' recording from 1997. The Waltz of the Flowers from Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker can surely be regarded as almost obligatory at this anniversary. The ballet dancers and our fantastic harpist Lara Macri recreate the magic of this jewel among waltzes. And now you can look forward to experiencing the melodies from The Phantom of the Opera by Andrew Lloyd Webber in a symphonic arrangement by Andrew Cotte: The Phantom of the Opera Symphonic Suite. We conclude with the mighty Jupiter from The Planets by Gustav Holst. And then we have a "little" encore up our sleeve... Programme: Copland / Fanfare for the Common Man Tchaikovsky / Serenade for Strings, 1st movement Halvorsen / Norwegian Rhapsody No. 1 Puccini / Intermezzo from Manon Lescaut Tchaikovsky / Excerpt from Swan Lake Orion's Belt / Svalbard theme John Williams / Princess Leia's Theme from Star Wars Prokofiev / The Montagues and Capulets from Romeo and Juliet Verdi / Overture to The Force of Destiny (La forza del destino) Elgar / Nimrod from the Enigma Variations Morricone / Love Theme from Cinema Paradiso (arr. Angela Morley) Tchaikovsky / Waltz of the Flowers from The Nutcracker Lloyd Webber / The Phantom of the Opera Symphonic Suite (arr. Andrew Cotte) Holst / Jupiter from The Planets
