The Oslo-filharmonien Chamber Series
Oktett fra Oslo-Filharmonien
Description
The Oslo-filharmonien Chamber Series: Symphonic fantasy in chamber format In the world of chamber music, great universes can be contained in small ensembles. Welcome to a concert with a programme that offers a chamber-music perspective on the great orchestral works played the same week. Here the same aesthetic ideas are explored as in Nordheim, Lutosławski and Berlioz, but in a more concentrated and direct expression. Sebastian Fargerlund: Autumn Equinox Sebastian Fagerlund (b. 1972) spent over two and a half years on the opera Autumn Sonata. It was during this work that the octet Autumn Equinox grew forth, almost like a shadow of the orchestral work. Some of the moods, tone colours and musical material from the opera are found again in the octet, but as a mirror image seen at a distance. The octet consists of three movements: The start of the first movement presents the basic musical material. The movement is energetic and rhythmically driven, with motifs that overlap and collide. The second movement opens up a sound world in which the material from the first movement is slowed down and expanded. In the third movement we return to the rhythmic energy of the first. Jean Françaix: À huit Jean Françaix (1912–1997) wrote À huit – «for eight» – on commission from the violinist and conductor Willi Boskovsky, founder of the Wiener Oktett. Boskovsky needed a work for a programme that already contained Schubert's Octet, and Françaix dedicated his octet «to the memory of Franz Schubert.» The work is built up in four movements: The open, energetic first movement gives room to all eight instruments, before the second movement draws out the individual instruments and sets them in dialogue with one another. The slow third movement shows Françaix's gift for writing simple but memorable melodies. The finale begins with a touch of mock solemnity, before the music moves into an elegant waltz. Performers: James Patterson, Horn Linn Ringstad, Bassoon Pierre Xhonneux, Clarinet Guro Asheim, Violin Brage Sæbø, Violin Nanna Sørli, Viola Johannes Martens, Cello Nicholas Chalk, Double bass
