An Evening with Fazil Say

Fazil Say

Description

Colourful with Fazil Mussorgskij's picturesque masterpiece, jazzy genre-play and Turkish cultural heritage are on the programme when the star pianist Fazil Say plays at Operaen for the third time. Buy Great sonorities and strong colours Pictures at an Exhibition from 1874 is one of Modest Musorgskij's best-known works. Although it was originally written for piano, as you will hear it this evening, it was only after later orchestrations that the music truly achieved its breakthrough - especially Maurice Ravel's version from 1922. Across ten movements, the composer paints ten pictures from the memorial exhibition for his recently deceased friend, the painter and architect Viktor Hartmann - from grotesque sketches and medieval portraits to the mighty finale, The Great Gate of Kiev. The pieces are bound together by musical “promenades”, small recurring interludes that give you the feeling that you yourself are wandering between the paintings. In Fazil Say's hands this work gains a distinctive drama and freshness, marked by his sense of colour, rhythm and richness of detail. Say's world Fazil Say is a world name both as a pianist and a composer, and has written a number of commissioned works, symphonies and oratorios. After the interval we enter his characteristic musical world, marked by exuberance, playfulness and joy in storytelling. Through a selection of his own compositions, his ability to build a bridge between the classical repertoire and Turkish musical heritage shines. The expression ranges from the existential Yeni hayat - “new life” - via the lyrical ballads, musical stories rooted in Turkish culture and poetry, to Kara Toprak - one of his most popular pieces. The almost cinematic Claros, inspired by the oracles at an ancient sacred site in present-day Turkey, forms a dramatic high point of the programme. From there Say launches into virtuosic genre-play with Jazz Fantasies and Paganini Jazz.
