Classical music you already know
🎵 KLASSIKERGUIDEN #2: Classical music in popular culture
“Oh, I know that one!” It's a common reaction when people discover that the melody from an advert or film is actually a classical masterpiece. Let's look at some you've almost certainly heard before!
From ballet to adverts
Tchaikovsky's “The Nutcracker” turns up everywhere at Christmas - from shopping-centre loudspeakers to Coca-Cola adverts. The well-known “Waltz of the Flowers” and “Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy” were originally written for ballet, but now live a life of their own in popular culture.
Film music's favourites:
“Also sprach Zarathustra” by Richard Strauss - known from the opening of “2001: A Space Odyssey”
“Ride of the Valkyries” by Wagner - used in “Apocalypse Now” and countless other films
Mozart's “Requiem” - has created an eerie atmosphere in countless thrillers
Did you know...
Carl Orff's “O Fortuna” from Carmina Burana, which you may know from epic film trailers and football broadcasts, is actually a medieval poem about the fickle wheel of fate?
Gateway piece of the month: Holst's “The Planets: Jupiter”
You have almost certainly heard this majestic movement from Holst's orchestral suite “The Planets” in both films and on TV. The mighty main theme is made for epic moments - you often hear it in film trailers, documentaries and sports broadcasts. This is music that truly shows how grand an orchestra can be!
Three classics you didn't know you knew:
“Air” by Bach - known from countless weddings and adverts
Beethoven's Symphony No. 5 - “Fate knocking at the door” (da-da-da-DAA)
“Morning Mood” by Grieg - used in everything from adverts for Norway to international films
Current concerts for new listeners:
