Trondheim's great hall for concerts and events, Byscenen, is a house with a lot of history, both cultural and in terms of social engagement. Byscenen was formerly known as Arbeiderforeningen and was established at its present address as early as 1878. In the opening year Ole Bull honoured Arbeiderforeningen with two sold-out concerts, which became his last visit ever to Trondheim. In 1882 Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson stood at the speaker's podium of Arbeiderforeningen in the banqueting hall and gave a lecture about America's economic and social conditions before a record-sized gathering of over 1500 people. Since then Arbeiderforening has housed bazaars, boxing matches, a dance school, theatre productions, public meetings and, not least, concerts. Byscenen as we know the premises today was completed in the spring of 2010, after a long period of modernisation and rehabilitation, on the initiative of the Sparebank 1 SMN cultural foundation. Byscenen is now a state-of-the-art venue with every conceivable facility. We stage large and small concerts all year round, but also other genres such as stand-up and live podcasts, as well as events such as Kosmorama's Kanon Prize ceremony, Adresseavisen's Ut-Awards, NTNU's Research Grand Prix, election meetings, assorted company kick-offs, launches and parties. Together with the restaurant Alma's and the basement pub Boxer we offer a complete cultural meeting place in the heart of Trondheim.
