Danske Musikkonservatorium has a focus on Carl Nielsen in the autumn of 2026. This also applies to this concert collaboration between ATHELAS and the conservatoire, more specifically the conservatoire’s conducting class. Carl Nielsen – and not least the circle around him in the years after his death in 1931 – kept the Central European currents, marked by late Romanticism and Expressionism, partly away from Danish concert life. Carl Nielsen was ‘canonised’ as a national composer, and his distinctive character was celebrated. A distinctiveness that is expressed, among other things, in the finale of the 6th Symphony. Danish composers after Nielsen have had to come to terms with this musical legacy. This has happened in many ways. From direct inspiration, via a certain kinship, to outright rejection. But the most important legacy of Carl Nielsen is perhaps that the distance from the Central European music scene also came to shape the generations after Nielsen. They held firm to other aesthetic points of orientation, e.g. towards ‘the Nordic’. The concert’s works by Vagn Holmboe, Per Nørgård and Anders Nordentoft are examples of the distinctive character of Danish music in the generations after Carl Nielsen. They form a bridge to the concert’s new work, for which we have invited the young composer Asli Emre from the conservatoire’s composition class to engage with the Danish composer icon Carl Nielsen at a distance of 4 generations.
