Organ Recital on the Main Organ with Henrik Skærbæk Jespersen
Henrik Skærbæk Jespersen, orgel
Description
French sound - from Baroque to Romantic Cathedral organist Henrik Skærbæk Jespersen plays French music by Marchand and Franck. This November concert in the Cathedral offers two works that, each in its own way, show the French organ's special ability to transform the church space into an entire orchestra. Louis Marchand's Grand Chœur Dialogue was written around 1696 and belongs to the great organ music of the French Baroque. Here powerful sonorities, elegant melodies and virtuosic figures meet in a musical interplay between different groups of stops. It is music with festivity, drama and colour - and you do not need to know much about organ music to be swept away. A good 150 years later, César Franck wrote his monumental Grande Pièce Symphonique. The work is almost 25 minutes long and is regarded as one of the central organ works of French Romanticism. With Franck the organ almost becomes an entire symphony orchestra: from the quiet and contemplative to great, dramatic waves of sound and a magnificent conclusion. Two French composers, two very different musical worlds - and an organ that is allowed to show how many colours and expressions are hidden in the instrument.
