Brahms: Piano Trio No. 3 in C minor, Op. 101 Performers: Esther Mielewczyk, violin; Mette Spang-Hanssen, cello; Ole Bartholin Kiilerich, piano There are not enough superlatives in the language to describe Brahms' piano trios! Bad music by Brahms, as is well known, simply does not exist – everything that did not live up to his extremely high standards was thrown into the wood-burning stove before anyone could discover it. And the three piano trios stand as an absolute chamber music milestone of the Romantic era. The third and last, in C minor from 1886, is a work of intense emotional depth and shows the experienced, bearded master's both explosively dramatic and lyrically singable genius. And then there is the chance to make the acquaintance of three composers on whom the spotlight has shone to a far lesser degree: from the Frenchman Jean Cras (roughly contemporary with Ravel) we get a harp quintet that demonstrates in the finest way why the French love the harp so much. His compatriot Louise Farrenc was Paris's only female piano professor in the 19th century – and her sextet for piano and winds is regarded as one of her best works. Finally we will meet the 44-year-old Russian oboist and composer Andrei Rubtsov, who is one of his country's great comets in music for woodwinds. Programme: Cras: Harp Quintet in A major Rubtsov: Four Bagatelles for wind quartet Farrenc: Wind Sextet in C minor, Op. 40 Brahms: Piano Trio No. 3 in C minor, Op. 101
