Bach Perspective

Description

For the concert Bach Perspective, cellist Tobias van der Pals and saxophonist Thomas Agergaard perform a musical interplay of newly composed music that stands on the shoulders of Bach as well as contemporary improvised music and Nordic folk tunes. Bach's suites are played as written by Tobias van der Pals, and between the movements Thomas Agergaard and Tobias van der Pals play new compositions that both reflect the music of the preceding movement and lead into the next. Cellist Tobias van der Pals and saxophonist Thomas Agergaard each have roots in a different musical style, but both have crossed boundaries in search of a broader expression. Together the two musicians meet on a shared platform, in musical reflections on an old master's music. The two musicians come from different musical traditions. Tobias van der Pals is a classically trained cellist and has for a number of years performed Bach's six cello suites around the world. He also has a background as a jazz bassist and improvising musician. Thomas Agergaard has a long career as a jazz saxophonist and has in recent years worked with scored avant-garde music. In Bach Perspective their different experiences meet in a new musical expression, where Bach's music becomes the starting point for improvisation and new compositions. The result is a concert with an unusual combination of cello and saxophone and a unique sound world.
