The Classical Series: The Second Work
Description
NB: There is a warm-up talk at 19.00 before the concert In the second programme of our classical series we focus on the "No. 2s" of the classical world, with three works that are all masterpieces from their composers' prominent periods – while at the same time being characteristic of the era in which they were born. Jaakko Kuusisto's "Play II" is an energetic portrait of its time: you almost see a film unfold over the music; Shostakovich's second piano trio was written during the Second World War and paints the horrors of the time as vividly as his Leningrad Symphony; whereas Dvořák's second piano quartet brings a different, more "naive" kind of energy, where he stands on the shoulders of the "old masters" from Mozart to Brahms, but looks ahead towards a bright future. The three works offer a journey backwards through time, where we see a kaleidoscope of eras through the prism of energy and tension. Programme: JAAKKO KUUSISTO (1974-2022) "Play II" for piano quartet, Op. 16 DMITRI SHOSTAKOVICH (1906-1975) Piano Trio No. 2 in E minor, Op. 67 I. Andante – Moderato II. Allegro con brio III. Largo IV. Allegretto Interval ANTONÍN DVOŘÁK (1841-1904) Piano Quartet No. 2 in E-flat major, Op. 87 I. Allegro con fuoco II. Lento III. Allegro moderato, grazioso – Un pochettino più mosso IV. Finale. Allegro ma non troppo
