Johann Sebastian Bach: Mass in B minor
Dirigent: Jonathan Ofir
Description
Copenhagen Soloists, choir, soloists and ensemble. Conductor: Jonathan Ofir Johann Sebastian Bach: Mass in B minor. Copenhagen Soloists, conductor Jonathan Ofir. Johann Sebastian Bach's Mass in B minor is regarded as one of the greatest masterpieces in the history of Western music. The work came into being over a long period of years and took its final form shortly before Bach's death in 1750. Rather than being composed for one particular service, Bach gathered here music from different periods of his life and created a monumental work that sums up his lifelong experience as a composer. The Mass comprises the five parts of the Latin Ordinary - Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus and Agnus Dei - and unites magnificent choruses, virtuoso arias and moving ensembles in a unique musical whole. Bach spans an impressive range of styles, from strict Renaissance polyphony to the high baroque concerto style, and demonstrates a compositional skill that still inspires admiration. Although the work was rarely performed in Bach's own lifetime, the Mass in B minor stands today as the culmination of his church music and as a universal testament to faith, humanity and artistic creativity. It is rightly counted among the most significant choral works in music history. The ensemble performs the work in a soloistic format - with just 11 singers sharing the choir and solo parts, and an orchestra on baroque instruments. The concert lasts 1 ½ hours. Tickets at www.copenhagen soloists.dk (275 kr. under 25s: 205 kr.) and at the door from 15.30.
