A groundbreaking minimalist work for percussion, voices and piccolo Steve Reich's Drumming (1970–71) is a groundbreaking minimalist work for percussion, voices and piccolo, which unfolds over about an hour without an interval. The work is built around a single rhythmic pattern and explores phase shifting, gradual rhythmic change and shifting tone colours as bongo drums, marimbas, glockenspiel, voices and piccolo are layered on top of one another. Inspired, among other things, by Reich's studies of West African drumming, "Drumming" is the culmination of his early process-based style and a decisive turning point in modern music.
