Description

Fate knocks at the door in Beethoven's iconic 5th Symphony, and star soloist Christian Gerhaher sings Schönberg in a new orchestral arrangement. Three short notes and one long. Ludwig van Beethoven was a shining example of how music does not need to be complicated to hit the mark. And with the opening of his famous 5th Symphony he gave the world a lesson in how quickly, elegantly and precisely one can set a mood and give the listener the feeling that now you really must prick up your ears. Principal Conductor Marie Jacquot and Det Kongelige Kapel have, in other words, hold of one of the truly legendary heirlooms of classical music and a cornerstone of European culture, as the notes of Beethoven's 5th Symphony - the one popularly known as the Fate Symphony - soar up towards the gilded ceiling above the Main Stage of Operaen. In the symphony, Beethoven portrays a development from the darkness of the dramatic 1st movement to the shining finale, which opens with a magnificent fanfare. It is music you cannot help humming along to, and a symphony that is impossible not to be swept along by. You also stand a good chance of being swept along when Marie Jacquot leads the Kapel through Beethoven's overture to the staging of the play Coriolan, which is about the pride and fall of a victorious Roman general. After that we change both century and composer, as the German baritone Christian Gerhaher, one of the finest lieder interpreters of his generation, takes the stage. He sings Arnold Schönberg's work Das Buch der hängenden Gärten, which was written in the wake of the composer's own failed marriage and a newfound interest in the poet Stefan George's accounts of an unhappy love affair. So expect a pervasively dreamy atmosphere and a feeling of fragile beauty and inevitable dissolution, when Christian Gerhaher interprets Schönberg's melancholy universe for the first time on Danish soil.
