Det Kongelige Kapel (the Royal Danish Orchestra) is a Danish symphony orchestra that can trace its roots back to the corps of trumpeters founded by Christian 1. in 1448. The corps was subsequently expanded on several occasions; but in the financially straitened years of Denmark's participation in the Thirty Years' War its numbers were cut. Around 1700 it began to grow again, and its duties were extended to include opera performances as well. The orchestra is believed to be the oldest in existence in the world. Many great conductors and composers have worked with Det Kongelige Kapel over the years. Among the greatest names are Wilhelm Furtwängler, Carl Maria von Weber, Carl Nielsen, Richard Strauss, Igor Stravinsky, Sergiu Celibidache and Leonard Bernstein. In more recent years new activities have been added, such as studio recordings, New Year's concerts and concert tours abroad. The most recent significant event in the orchestra's history is the move to the Opera House. The orchestra's chief conductor is the French conductor Marie Jacquot, who took up the post in the 2024/2025 season.
