Fuglsang Musikforening
Nykøbing Falster
Fuglsang Musikforening was founded on 31 March 1996.
The society's goal is to give the region and the Danish music world the opportunity to preserve Fuglsang as the significant cultural and music institution it has been for over 100 years. The board works very deliberately to offer concertgoers on Lolland-Falster a wide range of musical experiences, played by the finest musicians.
The repertoire ranges from medieval music to the music of our own day, with the main emphasis on what is called "classical chamber music". But it is always a special pleasure when the society can also present its audience with entirely new compositions, world premieres or exciting, unusual young ensembles.
Fuglsang Musikforening came into being at Fuglsang Herregaard, which lies on Lolland's east coast, about 10 km from Nykøbing F. The building stands in a beautiful park by Guldborgsund. A Fuglsang has existed since the Middle Ages, but the place's importance for music - especially chamber music - took off in 1819, when the Neergaard family bought the estate.
Viggo Neergaard, who was the 3rd generation at the estate, moved at ease in Copenhagen's musical life together with all the Romantic Golden Age composers: I.P.E. Hartmann and his son Emil Hartmann, Hornemann, Gade, Heise, Winding and others.
In 1869 Viggo Neergaard replaced the then building with the present main house, built in the Rosenborg style. He lived there alone until 1885, when he married Bodil, 30 years his junior, daughter of Emil Hartmann. After she had moved in, there were frequent musical visits, both from friends from Copenhagen, from Edvard Grieg from Norway and from Grieg's friends, the musicians Julius and Amanda Röntgen.
Later Carl Nielsen came and became an annually returning guest, with his own composer's room in the gardener's house at the bottom of the park. And with the Nielsen family came the later son-in-law, the violinist Emil Telmany. In more recent times the composer Niels Viggo Bentzon, whose mother was a cousin of Bodil Neergaard, has also come.
All these music people created every year in late summer a flourishing musical environment around Fuglsang. By day they played and composed, and in the evening - after the stylish dinner - they made music for one another in the music room.
On 27 June 1947 Bodil Neergaard transferred Fuglsang to Det Classenske Fideicommis by sale. After her death in 1959 the main building and the park were - entirely in her spirit and that of the place - used as a refuge where the musical traditions could be carried on.
During the 33 years the refuge existed, there was a concert every Sunday in summer (and every other Sunday in winter) for the refuge's guests, but with public access. In this way the place became to an even greater degree a cultural powerhouse for Lolland and Falster.
When the refuge's operation ceased in 1995, the musical tradition was carried on in the following ways:
Fuglsang Musikforening was formed. The society arranges 9 concerts every year, always on the first Sunday in February-June and August-November.
Ensemble Storstrøm made its home at Fuglsang Hovedgård.
In 2015 the new concert hall KUMUS opened in Fuglsang's old tenant farmer's house. Here Ensemble Storstrøm now has its rehearsal room, and concerts are held regularly.
