Genklange
København
GENKLANGE offers classical concerts for children (3 - 8 years old) with a repertoire adapted to the children, and where there is room for packed lunches, dancing feet and sudden trips to the toilet. During the concert the musicians make it relevant to the children, and afterwards everyone is welcome to come up and take a closer look at the instruments.
How it started
GENKLANGE was founded in 2013 by Gabriella Meinert-Medici, who is now the day-to-day manager. The idea sprang from a personal need for classical concerts for children, and as we could not really find any, we began to arrange them ourselves. We started with monthly concerts at Gentofte Hovedbibliotek, but have now expanded to three venues in the Copenhagen area, and play a total of 30 concerts a year, with 12 regular professional ensembles.
P2 Ildsjælsprisen 2016
In 2014 we were proud to receive the initiative award in Gentofte Municipality, and in 2016 Gabriella and the association were awarded P2's prize "Årets Ildsjæl" at a ceremony in the concert hall of the old Radiohus. At the time the jury wrote the following:
With a rarely seen commitment, Gabriella shows that classical music is relevant to everyone. No matter where you come from and how old you are. Through outreach work she enters into dialogue with children who would otherwise not meet the treasure chest of classical music. Gabriella teaches coming generations to listen, and that is more important than ever in a noisy age. - P2 Ildsjæl jury statement.
Since then Genklange has worked to improve and develop the concert format, and to add even more classical ensembles, with the ambition of making classical music accessible to everyone.
Expanded with music education, workshops and a rolling concert hall
At the same time the association has experienced great interest in its work from municipalities and foundations, all of which were seeking new initiatives that could create a greater range of cultural and artistic activities in Danish early-years settings. The association has subsequently begun to focus even more on this, and today Genklange develops and offers classical music-education workshops in a wide range of early-years settings in Zealand - from 12 institutions in Copenhagen's 3 largest social housing areas to settings in outlying areas such as Lolland and Falster.
GENKLANGE's newest initiative is Den Klassiske Musikkuffert, to strengthen the daily work with curriculum themes and art in Danish early-years settings across the country. Most recently the association has also received large grants from Nordea-fonden and Den Obelske Familiefond, for the development and realisation of Den Rullende Koncertsal, which aims to bring classical concerts for children and teddy bears to every corner of the country.
