After four years with Haydn, the first great figure of the Viennese Classical school, we turn our gaze to Mozart – with every prerequisite in place for understanding how special and innovative his music was, and how deeply it is indebted to Haydn. We therefore let Haydn frame the three days, starting with his Military Symphony and ending with Symphony No. 98. In addition, at the festival's first concert we shall hear Mozart's Bassoon Concerto with the orchestra's principal bassoonist Ignas Mažvila as soloist, and Mozart's last and – according to some – greatest symphony: the Jupiter Symphony. At the Saturday concert you can look forward to hearing one of Mozart's absolute masterpieces for choir, soloists and orchestra, namely the Great Mass in C minor, in collaboration with Ars Nova Copenhagen. The audience can also look forward to a rare performance of Haydn's choral work, Der Sturm. Sunday's concerts will both focus on the last year of Mozart's life – 1791 – which spans musically from the deep and sombre to the absolutely life-affirming. The star pianist Angela Hewitt will perform Piano Concerto No. 27 and strong soloists will perform arias from The Magic Flute and La clemenza di Tito, which even had its premiere on 6 September 1791. We close the whole festival with the symphony that Haydn reportedly wrote in memory of his dear friend and colleague.
