Theatre of Voices Festival
23. jun. - 29. jun.
København
THEATRE OF VOICES was founded in London in 1990 by Paul Hillier and shortly afterwards gave its first concert in Berlin with new works by Arvo Pärt, including his Berliner Messe. The ensemble's second concert was with music by John Cage at the Almeida Festival in London. After a number of years in which Theatre of Voices followed Paul Hillier's university appointments in the San Francisco area and performed all over North America, Hillier moved back to Europe in 2003, where Theatre of Voices has been based in Copenhagen ever since.
Theatre of Voices is considered one of the world's leading vocal ensembles and focuses mainly on new music, but often interwoven with all kinds of early music, reflecting Hillier's lifelong fondness for precisely these two ends of the musical spectrum. This has led to close collaborations with numerous composers and instrumental ensembles: Arvo Pärt, Steve Reich, Terry Riley, John Cage, Kronos Kvartetten, Ingram Marshall, John Adams, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Pelle Gudmundsen-Holmgreen, London Sinfonietta, Michala Petri, Jóhann Jóhannsson, Fretwork, Phantasm, Concerto Copenhagen, Kaija Saariaho, Peter Sellars, David Lang, Michael Gordon, Pablo Ortiz, Heiner Goebbels, Smith Quartet, Meta4 String Quartet; and in the near future Helena Tulve, Sunleif Rasmussen, John Luther Adams, and many more.
In Denmark Theatre of Voices has collaborated especially with Pelle Gudmundsen-Holmgreen, who wrote and dedicated works to the ensemble alone and in collaboration with Kronos Kvartetten and London Sinfonietta - documented on two recordings for Dacapo Records. Most recently the ensemble has worked with the composer Line Tjørnhøj on her music-theatre installation enTmenschT - premiere in Aarhus 2018. TOV performs at renowned festivals, opera houses and prominent concert halls all over the world, but also takes part in projects in more unusual venues and parts of the world - Schindlers Fabrik in Poland and the national bank of Colombia are a couple of examples. In 2019 the ensemble is going on a North Atlantic tour to give concerts in the Faroe Islands, Iceland and Greenland with brand-new music from each of these places.
