Welcome to our interview relay with musicians from the classical music scene! Today we are delighted to introduce August Schieldrop. He works as a tuba player. Here he shares his thoughts on classical music and recommends upcoming concerts for both new and experienced concertgoers!
Name, instrument and profession?
August Schieldrop, tuba, soloist and chamber musician
What are you working on at the moment?
Skogstad's tuba concerto!
Most overrated composer or piece?
Haydn
And at the opposite end… which music should everyone really get to experience?
Music by Alexander Scriabin; he wrote some masterpieces!
Your latest great concert experience – what made it special?
I play many concerts and also often go out to hear concerts, so it is hard to choose. But some of my favourite projects are the concerts I do with Ensemble Forte, the chamber group I play in! I am already looking forward to the summer concerts :)
Which living composer inspires you most, and why?
Harald Ramm Haugland. He is both the most talented composer I have met, and one of the most talented musicians I have played with. I think he will be regarded as one of the greatest Norwegian composers of all time.
Can you remember a particular event or experience that made you decide to become a musician?
When I realised I wanted to be a musician, I actually already knew that it was what I had always wanted. I have always loved practising and playing with others.
Do you have any role models? Is there anyone who has been particularly motivating or inspiring for you?
Tine Thing Helseth, Jens Bjørn-Larsen and Christian Lindberg
Do you have any advice for “new listeners” who are curious about classical music but rarely go to concerts?
Go to a live concert! Classical music is much better live!
Any upcoming concerts you would recommend?
I am playing at the gala concert for the brass band European Championships in Koncerthuset in Stavanger on 10 May. You would have to look long and hard for a better audience than there, so I am really looking forward to it!
Minister for classical music in Norway for a day – what would you do?
Allow the serving and consumption of drinks during concerts.
Name one thing not many people know about you?
That I think boiled potatoes are the dullest thing in the world. Give me baked, fried, deep-fried or any other way of preparing potatoes instead.
What do you like to do to relax when you are not playing or practising? Do you have any special hobbies?
I love playing tennis, chess and other games.
What misconceptions do you think people have about classical music or the musicians who perform it?
That classical music is a single genre. Classical music spans several hundred years and consists of many different genres. Classical music is rather a collective term for all art-music genres than a genre in itself.
Concert attire: formal or casual?
Formal!
Applause between movements: for or against?
FOR!!
Finally – who would you like to challenge to take over the baton?
Ludvig Gudim!
