Composer Frederik Zeuthen recommends concerts in August
Frederik Zeuthen is a composer and guitarist based in Copenhagen. He currently studies in the soloist class at Det Kongelige Danske Musikkonservatorium under Bent Sørensen and Jeppe Just, and has previously studied at Det Jyske Musikkonservatorium and Musikhögskolan in Malmö. As a composer and musician he has moved within many different genres and forms of expression - from the acoustic to the electronic, from jazz to experimental video installations. At the moment he is finishing a duet for recorder and accordion for Michala Petri and Bjarke Mogensen, while also working on the music for a new feature film by Ludvig C. N. Poulsen. He has previously received the Léonie Sonning Talent Prize and the Carl and Anne Marie Carl-Nielsen Talent Prize.
11/12 Aug - Open rehearsal with Copenhagen Phil
As a composer I am very interested in processes, and in how things are created. In this open rehearsal with Copenhagen Phil and conductor Tobias Ringborg there is a unique opportunity to experience, and learn more about, how a conductor works with an orchestra. On 11 and 12 August the rehearsal is specifically for "The Best of La Boheme", a concert that is part of this year’s Copenhagen Opera Festival.
14 Aug - EQUINOX Festival
As I write, I am taking part in a composers’ workshop in France called Creative Dialogue, where the focus is on the meeting between different art forms. A similar meeting can be experienced at Equinox Festival, where it is dance and music that are in creative dialogue. The festival places particular emphasis on highlighting new and/or underrepresented composers, such as Kaija Saariaho, Jennifer Higdon and Florence Price. So here is a unique opportunity to experience something new in a completely new way!
14 Aug - Concert with Laura Helene Hansen
When people talk about those who simply seem born to do what they do, I always think of my old fellow student Laura Helene Hansen, who is very deservedly this year’s opera talent at Copenhagen Opera Festival. She is quite simply the wildest singer and performer, who just has to be experienced. Laura has put together the programme herself, which focuses on death arias, and is accompanied by pianist Steven Moore. My warmest recommendations for this concert!
15 Aug - Aarhus Symfoniorkester
With their chief conductor Dmitry Matvienko at the helm, Aarhus Symfoniorkester kicks off the season with Nielsen’s Clarinet Concerto with the orchestra’s principal clarinettist Mathias Kjøller as soloist, Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5, which one never tires of, and a more recent work 'Di drømm dæ bringe vos sammel' by the Danish composer Lil Lacy, who in this work looks back to her South Jutland roots. I can also warmly recommend this concert.
18 Aug - Concert with Aarhus Kammerorkester
On 18 August you can experience the fantastic Aarhus Kammerorkester led by conductor Johanne Sofie Bech Madsen, who play a concert under the open sky in Musikhusparken in Aarhus. They perform works by Debussy, Mahler and Caroline Shaw, as well as one of my older pieces "Mirage" for string ensemble, which I wrote at the time for the Swedish ensemble Musica Vitae, based on impressions of works by the Danish painter Maja-Lisa Engelhardt.
