In one way, the Taiwanese-Australian duo Twoset Violin has done something new for classical music. In another, they take up something old, which they develop further, especially through social media, and spread widely to a large crowd of young fans.
Twoset Violin probably divide opinion in the established world of classical music.
On Sunday 17 March, Twoset Violin played in DR Koncertsalen. Klassisk Bureau was there.
W. A. Mozart would surely have loved it. And Victor Borge would probably have joined in the entertainment. The audience in Copenhagen took part with loud laughter, outbursts and applause as Brett Yang (32) and Eddy Chen (31) romped around the big stage, which they shared with their pianist, Sophie Druml. There was plenty of room, you might say. But the personalities of Brett and Eddy also take up a lot of space in the Twoset Violin brand. It was not so important exactly what was played, we got the impression. As long as it was classical music. No programme booklet was handed out to the audience, so you had to follow the not very clear announcement of the works yourself. Instead, the concert came across as more ad hoc, improvised and relaxed, even though everything is of course rehearsed and planned in advance.
”Did you practise today?”, was one of the first questions to the audience that Eddy Chen threw out over the edge of the stage. And from there, Twoset Violin, who according to their own website have more than 7.5 million followers on social media, had DR Koncertsalen on their side too.
Eddy Chen and Brett Yang were both born in Taiwan, but raised and educated in Australia, and the subject of practising is precisely a theme the duo return to again and again in their videos. The fact that the practising joke was presented right from the start of the show worked as a clear point of reference for the audience, who evidently know all the crazy, funny and creative videos the two friends churn out in a steady stream. Check it out yourself on Instagram, TikTok and YouTube if you don't already know them: a wealth of whims, jokes, funny situations and staging of their own personalities. In a natural way.
