Beside Helligåndskirken on Amagertorv in Copenhagen stands Helligåndshuset, which at over 700 years old is one of the oldest buildings in the capital. A helligåndshus (house of the Holy Spirit) was originally a secular charitable institution that provided nursing care for the poor and took care of foundlings. Helligåndshuset in Copenhagen (domus sancti spiritus Hafnis) later became part of a Holy Spirit monastery, but became a secular hospital again after the Reformation. Later the building was part of a children's home and house of correction, became a burial chapel and mortuary chapel for the church, and later a parish hall. After that the public library used the columned hall, and today the room is let for art exhibitions, chamber concerts, bazaars and, not least, antiquarian book fairs.
