Sct. Matthæus Kirke
Matthæusgade 31, 1666 København
In the middle of Vesterbro stands Sct. Matthæus Kirke. It is the oldest and largest church in the parish and has therefore been nicknamed Vesterbro's cathedral.
Sct. Matthæus Kirke is not only spacious in the physical sense. For us it is important that the church makes room for Vesterbro's differences – here you can be who you are. That is why inclusiveness is the common thread running through the church's events and the work around the church.
Here you can come to pop, rock and classical concerts with sound, light and atmosphere of the highest order. Or you can send your child to children's folk high school, where community, personal development, learning and play are the focus. And if you are getting married but do not have months to plan, perhaps a drop-in wedding is for you? In short, we have many events besides the Sunday services, confirmations and the other church occasions, which of course you will also find here.
The church also houses Det åbne atelier (the open studio), where vulnerable Vesterbro residents can spend a pleasant afternoon while expressing themselves creatively.
The inclusiveness also embraces theology, and here you are welcome no matter how, or what, you believe – or do not believe.
In Sct. Matthæus Kirke we would like to create a refuge from the hectic everyday life of Vesterbro – a space for calm, faith and reflection. We do so through, among other things, mindfulness services, silent walks and silence retreats. When the church is open, you are welcome to come in to the peaceful space and look around, sit in silence or perhaps light a candle.
We look forward to welcoming you to Sct. Matthæus Kirke, whether it is for a service, a concert, a silence retreat or something else entirely.
