Description
This concert is part of Jon Darre's master's project: performing all of Beethoven's sonatas for violin and piano together with pianist Vebjørn Anvik. Programme Ludwig van Beethoven (1770–1827) Sonata for violin and piano in A major, Op. 12 No. 2 Sonata for violin and piano in G major, Op. 96 No. 10 Performers Jon Darre (violin) Vebjørn Anvik (piano) About the concert The evening's two sonatas are very different in character and musical language. Sonata Op. 12 No. 2 in A major (1798) is among the first violin sonatas Beethoven published in Vienna. An important model was Mozart's "Auernhammer sonatas" (1781), which Beethoven studied in his youth in his home town of Bonn. This shows in the sonata's playful musicianship and elegance. At the same time, Beethoven's own originality clearly emerges, especially in the expressive melancholy of the second movement and in the rhythmic and harmonic inventions of the finale. The Sonata in G major Op. 96 (1812) is the last of Beethoven's violin sonatas and a masterpiece of the genre. The chamber-music dialogue between violin and piano is exquisitely crafted and marked by subtle nuances. The sonata has a bright basic character but at the same time spans a wide expressive range – from the friendly Ländler theme of the first movement and the beautiful cantabile of the second, via the energy and rhythmic snap of the scherzo, to the finale, where the variations unfold with harmonic inventiveness and richness of colour.
