Description
- 150 years on either side of Europe. In 2026 it is 150 years since Tsjajkovskij and Grieg composed two of their most significant piano works. In The Seasons, Tsjajkovskij set the whole year to music in twelve moods - from the crackling by the fireplace in January, to the bright nights of summer, the melancholy of autumn and expectant dance in December. At home in Bergen, Grieg wrote at the same time his Ballade in G minor, in which he settles accounts with his own feelings and creates his greatest instrumental work. Twelve years later the composers met in Leipzig and immediately struck a chord with each other: “Kindred spirits do not grow on trees!” wrote Edvard Grieg in a letter to Tsjajkovskij in 1888. The concert opens with Sæverud's Bird Whistle Variations, a work that has interesting similarities with Grieg's ballade. This programme was Thormod Rønning Kvam's solo debut at this year's Festspillene i Bergen, and he has since taken it with him around Norway, Denmark and England. Now he gives his first solo concert in Universitetets aula, in aid of the further development of Debutserien. Wolfgang Plagge presents the music along the way. Welcome! Concert programme: Harald Sæverud (1897-1992) Bird Whistle Variations, Op. 36 Peter Tsjajkovskioj (1840-1893) The Seasons, Op. 37 Edvard Grieg (1843-1907) Ballade in G minor, Op. 24
