Description

Programme Gisle Kverndokk, (1967-) Symphonic Dances (2014) 1. The Sorrow of Loneliness Therese Birkelund Ulvo, (1982-) The Waves (2026 Commissioned work - WORLD PREMIERE INTERVAL Sergei Rachmaninov, (1873-1943) Symphonic Dances, Op. 45 - Non Allegro - Andante con moto. Tempo di Valse - Lento assai-Allegro vivace About the concert This evening's concert offers a brand-new commissioned work by Therese Ulvo; The Waves for violin, mezzo-soprano and orchestra, with Guro Kleven Hagen and Tone Kummervold. Here she has taken Virginia Woolf's book of the same name as her starting point and draws text quotations from it. In the book the voices are woven into one another in a series of monologues, and Woolf herself said that here she wanted to write to a rhythm. Ulvo carries this on in her work and gives the soloists equal roles in conveying mood, rhythm and direction. The commissioned work is framed by symphonic dances; first comes the yearning The Sorrow of Loneliness from Gisle Kverndokk's Symphonic Dances, in which he gently weaves together melodies from Afghanistan, Kurdistan and Venezuela, and finally in the concert we get Rachmaninov's Symphonic Dances - his last major orchestral work, in which he sums up his entire compositional output and the result is unmistakably Russian, with grand orchestral sound, dramatic contrasts, beautiful melodic writing and bold colours. Classical Pre-concert Talk Would you like to know more about this evening's programme? Then we invite you to a Classical Pre-concert Talk ahead of the concert. Here you will have the chance to learn more about the music to be performed, the composers behind the works, and the historical contexts that shaped them. Everyone is warmly welcome to take part, whether you are an experienced listener or completely new to classical music. Host: Camilla Rusten Place: The foyer outside Store sal on the 3rd floor. Time: 18:15 (duration 15-20 minutes).
