Trondheim Symfoniorkester & Opera
Trondheim Symfoniorkester & Opera (TSO) is one of the country's largest cultural institutions, with a 100-year history.
The orchestra is funded by the state, county and municipality, and has its permanent home in Olavshallen. TSO is a powerhouse in the cultural life of Central Norway at an international level.
Trondheim can bask in long musical traditions. Right up to the 1800s the city retained its hegemony as a centre of church music, where many significant musicians based their work.
But European concert culture gradually asserted itself, and musical societies grew up that looked after the inhabitants' need for concert experiences.
Trondheim Symfoniorkester & Opera is one of the country's largest cultural institutions, with a history stretching back to 1909, when enthusiasts invited people to the first subscription concerts.
The Olav jubilee in 1930 brought an upswing, but it was only after the founding of Trondheim Kammerorkester in 1947 that the modern professional orchestra began to take shape.
TSO was taken over by the state and NRK in 1962, and eventually became one of the country's leading orchestras and a much-used radio orchestra. Throughout all these years TSO has grown in both size and quality.
