Description
- the symphony that triumphed in the end Programme Dmitrij Sjostakovitsj, (1906–75) Symphony No. 4 in C minor, Op. 43 (1935–36) - Allegretto poco moderato - Moderato con moto - Largo About the concert Chief Conductor Adam Hickox leads TSO in a symphony regarded as one of the absolute masterpieces of the last century. This is the first time we are playing this symphony, and we have LFMK with us on the team to really give it our all! Symphony No. 4 is the largest of Sjostakovitsj' symphonies in terms of the size of the orchestra, and it is truly massive and grandiose, yet carefully balanced against solo parts for several of the instrument groups. Sjostakovitsj had planned a grandiose symphony, full of great thoughts and emotions, and it was more or less finished when Stalin's fury at his modernist opera Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk meant that it had to be put away in a drawer and stay there. Only in 1961 did the Soviet authorities allow the premiere, and it became a worldwide triumph that truly cemented Sjostakovitsj as one of the greatest composers of his time.
