Vilde Frang is the soloist in Schumann's Violin Concerto In this concert Pablo Heras-Casado presents three works that all revolve around light and darkness, but in completely different ways. From Tjøgersen's flashing LED choreography via Schumann's forgotten violin concerto with Vilde Frang as soloist, to Stravinsky's legendary ballet. In the dark the fireflies flash their secret messages, each species with its own language of light. But light pollution makes it ever harder for them to find one another, and now they are threatened. Kristine Tjøgersen has translated this fragile natural language into music, in which the orchestra itself flashes LED lights in choreographed patterns. From the fireflies' vulnerable dance we move on to other kinds of encounters and magical creatures: Robert Schumann's violin concerto was written in a happy period of close friendships, but kept hidden for over 80 years. And in Stravinsky's The Firebird we meet a fantasy world in which a prince is rescued by a burning bird in a garden where evil has taken over.
