Carl Orff found an extensive collection of medieval poems from the 1200s and picked out 24 of these for a cantata that borrowed its title from the collection - Carmina Burana (songs from Bavaria). Here we find texts in German and Latin, drinking songs, songs about love, about eroticism, morally satirical texts and even a text about a swan being roasted on a spit! Orff has drawn rhythmic inspiration from Stravinsky, and the melodies are both Gregorian and inspired by folk music in this fantastic work. Young people from the city's music programmes are invited to Olavshallen, where together with our own choir, vocal ensemble and orchestra they will shine in Orff's masterpiece. The concert evening opens with Vítězslava Kaprálová's Suita rustica. Here she has used themes and motifs from Czech folk songs and dances, and the suite thus makes a splendid opening work for this concert.
