Camerata Nordica
Camerata Nordica is Kalmar County's professional chamber orchestra and is regarded as one of Sweden's foremost in its genre.
Camerata Nordica is part of Länsmusiken – Kalmar Läns Musikstiftelse. The orchestra was founded in 1974 and has had several names over the years, including Camerata Roman. Since 2004 the name has been Camerata Nordica.
What distinguishes the orchestra is that it plays in camerata form, without a conductor and standing in a tight formation, which gives energy and interplay. The orchestra consists of about 15 permanently employed and freelance musicians. To achieve variety and dynamism in the productions, different leaders are chosen.
Some of the leaders the orchestra has played with are Levon Chilingirian, Terje Tønnesen, Philippe Graffin, Pekka Kuusisto, Ernst Kovacic, Ulf Wallin, Antje Weithaas, Barnabas Kelemen and Giovanni Guzzo.
In addition to tours in Sweden, the orchestra has made several tours abroad. A special occasion was the debut at the BBC Proms in London, the world's largest festival of classical music.
In Kalmar County the orchestra has a strong relationship with its audience and strengthens musical life. The ensemble takes part with young people in the county, for example in Klassisk melodifestival and Länsstråkorkestern for young people.
Through an intimate collaboration with the record label BIS, Camerata Nordica has released a large number of recordings, three of which have been nominated for a Grammis award.
