Description
Felix Mendelssohn: Violin Concerto in E minor, Op. 64 Benjamin Britten: cantata “St. Nicolas” for tenor soloist, choir and orchestra, Op. 42 When amateurs and professionals stand on stage together, something special happens. We most recently experienced this at Vor Frelsers Kirke's 800th anniversary with the performance of Niels W. Gade's Elverskud in June 2025. This year we are expanding the collaboration. The project is a collaboration between Vor Frelsers Kirke in Horsens and Horsens Musik- og Balletskole and gives amateur choral singers and musicians from Horsens and the surrounding area the chance to perform together with professional soloists and musicians – including from Aarhus Symfoniorkester. Some of the professional musicians come from the Musik- og Balletskole, and at the same time even more talented pupils are brought in as part of the orchestra. This strengthens both talent development and the meeting between pupils, amateurs and professionals. The choir consists primarily of local amateur singers and works through a rehearsal programme with piano, tutti and a dress rehearsal with full orchestra. The amateur musicians are supported by professionals and take part in additional orchestra rehearsals. The violin soloist in the Mendelssohn is Lada Fedorova, trained at the conservatoires in Prague, Brno, Aarhus and Esbjerg, among others. She has been awarded numerous prizes at various competitions, including the international competition in Dolny Kubin SK, Concertino Praga CZ, the international competition in Zabrze PL and first prize from Radio Katowitze, PL. In 2012 she was awarded a prize from Her Royal Highness Princess Marie, which she received in person. The tenor soloist in St. Nicolas is Tomas Medici, a Danish tenor with a versatile career in both choral and solo music. He began his musical training in Københavns Drengekor and completed his soloist training at the Royal Academy of Music in London in 2001. Over a long career he has been employed in a number of Denmark's finest ensembles, including Ars Nova Copenhagen, with whom he won an American Grammy in 2011, Det Kongelige Operakor, Den Jyske Operas Kor and DR Koncertkoret, where he still sings. In addition he has appeared as a soloist both nationally and internationally, particularly in Baroque and contemporary music. Tomas has been the Evangelist in a number of Bach's Passions at concerts in Estonia, Latvia, Scotland, Germany and Denmark, sung the Evangelist in Pärt's Passio in Australia and had the role of the Opera Singer with the group Tiger Lillies in France. He also appears on the Grammy-nominated CD, BACH, with Anne Sofie von Otter, and most recently in 2025 he took part in Mads Damlund's release of Zinck's sonatas for clavichord. Tomas is a versatile singer who performs everything from children's concerts to Wagner, and he looks forward to singing Britten's St. Nicolas for the first time.
