BEETHOVEN IN MEMORIAM
Dirigent: Killian Farrell
,Frederik Munk Larsen, guitar
Description
Here we kick off our marking of the 200th anniversary of Beethoven's death: first with the overture to his only ballet, Prometheus from 1801, and after the interval with his bright, inventive and humorous - and perhaps at times somewhat overlooked? - 8th Symphony from 1812. At this time Beethoven's private life was a catastrophe of broken-down relationships. He was in something close to constant conflict with his two brothers, was chronically defiant towards authority, had given up the idea of a steady relationship with a woman and family life in his own home, and his increasing deafness naturally gave rise to both social isolation and embarrassing scenes in the concert halls. But none of this is heard in the 8th Symphony, which Beethoven himself held infinitely dear, and which is full of surprises, original ideas, intertextual jokes and wonderful melodies. The Swedish Malin Bång works with friction, unpredictability and contrasts in her music - and we can expect to find all of it in her brand-new guitar concerto Unfurling, which OS performs together with the internationally acclaimed Danish guitarist Frederik Munk Larsen. Programme: Beethoven: Prometheus Overture Bång: Unfurling, concerto for guitar and orchestra Beethoven: Symphony No. 8
