Description
Next year marks 200 years since Franz Schubert died. We are getting a head start on the commemoration with a programme that includes no fewer than two works by the great symphonist - namely the 5th and the unfinished 8th symphony. In the 5th symphony from 1816, we hear Schubert, aged 19 and a glowing admirer of Mozart, recreate the original instrumentation of his late idol's Symphony No. 40. The result is a light, cheerful and melodious work full of affectionate nods to Schubert's Viennese Classical models. Conversely, the mythically famous unfinished 8th symphony combines the characteristic songfulness of Schubert the lied-smith with unfathomable depth and a menacing undertone of despair, indeed perhaps even fear of the end that was to reach him six years later. Between the two works we get to hear something as relatively rare as a tuba concerto. The genre has gained ground on this side of the turn of the millennium - and tonight we hear the world premiere of a brand new tuba concerto by the Danish composer Kai Stensgaard. Programme: F. Schubert: Symphony No. 5 K. Stensgaard: Tuba Concerto (world premiere) F. Schubert: Symphony No. 8, The Unfinished
