Description

For Barbara Hannigan, Beethoven's Symphony No. 4 is above all about love - four movements bound together by the heartbeat of the composer in love and his feelings for his pupil, Baroness Therese Malfatti. After several successful performances of the work, Hannigan returns to Copenhagen with the symphony, which she calls "an absolute heartbreaker". The evening's new work is a world premiere by the Danish composer Signe Lykke, written for the concertmaster of the DR Symfoniorkestret, Christina Åstrand. When the two artists first met in 2022, they discovered a strong personal and musical connection, and now their collaboration culminates in a new violin concerto driven by improvisatory freedom, which receives its world premiere at this concert. The concert opens with a rarity by the father of American orchestral music, Aaron Copland. His Dance Symphony weaves together themes from ballet music and adds a touch of Stravinsky's rhythmic power, the freedom of jazz and Copland's own blend of intimacy and grandeur, building it all up to a radiant climax. Programme: Copland / Dance Symphony Signe Lykke / Violin Concerto (world premiere) Beethoven / Symphony No. 4
