Description

Many myths are attached to King Valdemar, among them the tale that, after blaspheming God, he was condemned every night to drive his hunting hounds from Vordingborg to Gurre. In 1899 Holger Drachmann presented his new play Gurre at Det Kongelige Teater. It was a failure. The dramatic and lyrical music that C.F.E. Horneman had written for the production, on the other hand, was not. Aziz Shokhakimov – a conductor who masters the art of conjuring up a shimmering atmosphere – makes his debut with the DR Symfoniorkestret in a selection of highlights from Horneman's Gurre Suite, side by side with one of the orchestral literature's greatest narrative works – Rimsky-Korsakov's wild and hypnotic journey through turbulent seas, crushing shipwrecks and fantastic visions in Scheherazade. Between the two dramatic works, something quite different awaits. In 1896 the ageing Brahms created a series of glowing songs about life and death based on biblical texts about love and consolation. One of the world's most acclaimed bass singers, the Dane Stephen Milling, brings Brahms' songs to life with his voice of exceptional weight and warmth. Programme: C.F.E. Horneman / Gurre Suite Brahms / Vier ernste Gesänge Rimsky-Korsakov / Scheherazade
