NIELSEN'S 2ND – OPENING CONCERT

Description

As a prelude to Carl Nielsen Konkurrencen you can experience an atmospheric opening concert in which music by Carl Nielsen is of course in the main spotlight. We begin, however, with the Estonian-Swedish Eduard Tubin, who is a generation younger than Carl Nielsen, but musically not unrelated to him. (Fun fact: Tubin's father sold a calf to buy his talented son's first piano). From him we shall hear the enigmatic and beautifully orchestrated Symphony No. 9, Sinfonia semplice (yet another Carl Nielsen reference!). And next we are the very first to hear a handful of Nielsen's loveliest songs in orchestral arrangements by the composer's contemporaries, published in Carl Nielsen Udgaven - before we conclude with his universally beloved and literally choleric, phlegmatic, melancholic and sanguine 2nd Symphony, "The Four Temperaments". Programme: Tubin: Symphony No. 9 Nielsen: Songs: Solnedgang; I Seraillets Have; Genrebillede; I Aften; Studie efter Naturen and others Nielsen: Symphony No. 2, The Four Temperaments
