OLLIKAINEN & LA VALSE
Dirigent: Eva Ollikainen
,Stefan Dohr, horn
Description
Desire, obsession and unstoppable vitality drive the music in this evening's concert! Ravel's dizzying La Valse actually began as a tribute to the Viennese waltz king Johann Strauss, but then World War 1 intervened, and the work developed into an almost seasick and dizzying picture of a dance losing its footing. Next, Steingrímur Rohloff's horn concerto adds a contemporary voice to the programme, before we hear one of the boldest and most provocative passages in the opera repertoire: Strauss's famous Dance of the Seven Veils from the opera Salome. Here the title character, the Jewish princess, dances her seductive dance in front of her stepfather King Herod, in return for being served the prophet Jochanaan's head on a platter. And then we conclude with the suite from Bartók's raw and electric The Miraculous Mandarin, where once again we meet people driven to the edge of their emotions: this time a young girl who is forced by a gang of robbers to lure potential victims into their den of crime - until she happens to lure the wrong one: a wealthy Chinese man who is obsessed with infatuation! A whole evening of music that seduces and challenges - with all the passion, beauty and maddening wildness that only a symphony orchestra can conjure up.
