Description
Old friends and mutual admirers share the bill when we invite you to a high-Romantic concert with three of the era's great voices: Schubert, Schumann and Brahms. With none of those gentlemen is the Romanticism grandly theatrical, but rather human and serene. We begin with bright optimism in Schubert's elegantly rocking Rosamunde Overture, which actually began its life as the overture to an entirely different Singspiel from a couple of years earlier, The Magic Harp, whose overture deserved a larger audience. Afterwards it turns poetic when we offer Schumann's Piano Concerto, which positively bubbles with warmth, longing and the happiness of love - one wonders whether the concerto may have been Schumann's description in music of his love for - and struggle to be allowed to marry - his beloved Clara. At the keyboard we meet the award-winning German/Korean pianist and experienced Schumann interpreter Christopher Park. Brahms's last symphony, the melancholy 4th, rounds off the evening with music that is far from being limited to the image of a dark or swan-song work, as it is often characterised. The symphony contains both clarity, power and a remarkable inner calm - a testimony that the mature Brahms could be put in neither the conservative nor the progressive box, but was 100% his own. Programme: F. Schubert: Rosamunde Overture R. Schumann: Piano Concerto J. Brahms: Symphony No. 4
