This week offers some of the most impressive names in classical music. Lise Davidsen, the world’s most sought-after soprano, gives a gala concert with Antonio Pappano in Verdi’s Macbeth at the Opera on Sunday, and on Monday audiences can experience her in a masterclass with the Opera Academy’s singers. It is rare to have the chance to experience an artist of her calibre both on stage and in a teaching situation.

Mahler’s Third Symphony is presented in no fewer than two versions this week. On Friday Odense Symfoniorkester plays the work together with Copenhagen Phil in Carl Nielsen Salen, and on Saturday the experience is repeated in Tivolis Koncertsal. Mahler’s longest symphony demands a lot of its audience, with a running time of almost two hours, but rewards with one of music history’s most ambitious orchestral experiences.

At DR Koncerthuset two generations meet on Thursday, when the young pianist Hasan performs Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 21 with DR SymfoniOrkestret. The same programme includes Strauss’s Don Juan, a work that shows orchestral music at the very highest level.

TriO con Brio Copenhagen continues its New Voices series in both Aarhus and Copenhagen with new Danish music by Rune Glerup. The ensemble has established itself as a central force in Danish chamber music and shows the way for the composers of today.

Mozart’s Idomeneo can be experienced in Robert Carsen’s staging at the Opera, while Concerto Copenhagen brings Vivaldi’s music to life in Køge. In Trinitatis Kirke, young Scandinavian talents conduct DR Vokalensemblet in a programme with Alma Mahler and Hugo Distler.

The week holds both the great international stars and the next generation of classical musicians – a combination that makes the month of May a special time in the Danish concert calendar.
