Maestoso - Allegro assai con fuoco About the concert This evening we fill with Norwegian musical treats picked from the top shelf, served by soloist Ragnhild Hemsing, conductor Rasmus Hella Mikkelsen and a festive TSO. We open with excerpts from Ørjan Matre's playful Lyric Pieces, in which he has interpreted and reflected on some of Grieg's lyric pieces for piano and given them new orchestral dress. Grieg's incidental music for Ibsen's Peer Gynt is almost to be regarded as a national treasure. In her work to revitalise the Hardanger fiddle and bring it into Norwegian orchestral music, Ragnhild Hemsing has put her folk-music stamp on the best-known pieces from it in Tormod Tvete Vik's arrangements. A project that has earned both national and international interest and recognition. Johan Svendsen's Symphony No. 1 was described by Grieg as "The most bubbling genius, the boldest national tone and a truly brilliant way of treating the orchestra", and the symphony is indeed fresh, colourful and lyrical.
