What does it mean to return - not to repeat, but to see and hear anew? In this concert we follow a line through time: from Johann Sebastian Bach via Nadia Boulanger to Aaron Copland. For Boulanger, Bach was a living language, not a historical monument, and through her teaching this heritage was carried on and transformed in new generations - among them Copland. The evening's central work, Copland's Clarinet Concerto, carries within it both the classical and the new: a sound world that moves from quiet contemplation to jazz-inspired energy. Around this work sound pieces by Bach, Boulanger and Igor Stravinsky - as different reflections of the same question: how can tradition be renewed without losing its core?
