Nasjonalballetten's Master Evening

Øyvind Bjorå

Description

Three works, three expressions, one master evening. When Nasjonalballetten packs its suitcase and travels west, it is with a full-evening performance packed with glittering stage pictures, powerful modern dance and the most iconic moments in the history of ballet. The audience will experience three works spanning more than a hundred years: from the elegant classical legacy of the ballet icon Makarova in Swan Lake, via Samantha Lynch's pulsating contemporary expression, to Balanchine's dazzling neoclassicism. Swan Lake in Makarova's guise The evening begins white and beautiful with Act 2 of Swan Lake, to Tchaikovsky's unique music. The second act is the swan act itself - the most iconic part of the ballet of all. The version you will see was created by the legendary dancer Natalia Makarova, after Petipa and Ivanov's original choreography from 1895. In her reconstructions of the classical ballets, Makarova's distinctive elegance shines through and lifts the stories to a new level. Fierce Ravel Samantha Lynch is a soloist with Nasjonalballetten - and also a sought-after choreographer. In recent years several of the world's leading ballet companies have commissioned works from her. For the tour we bring out her first work created for the Opera's main stage: A Boléro, set to Ravel's famous piece from 1928, in which the same musical motif is repeated and repeated - fiercer and more powerful each time. Audiences and critics loved A Boléro after its premiere in 2021. This is what ballet of our time can look like! Sparkling on pointe Can you make a ballet about jewels? That is what the master choreographer George Balanchine did in the three-part ballet Jewels. Now Nasjonalballetten dances the last part, Diamonds, where the expression, colours and choice of music are inspired by diamonds. Movement and music are two sides of the same coin, Balanchine believed. Here the dancing is to large parts of Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 3 in D major. Performers: Øyvind Bjorå, conductor In collaboration with Nasjonalballetten and Stavanger konserthus.
