Grieg Trio
Grieg Trio was formed in 1987 by Vebjørn Anvik (piano), Sølve Sigerland (violin) and Ellen Margrete Flesjø (cello), and today consists of the same musicians as it did then. This is probably also part of the reason for the position the ensemble has built up as an internationally leading piano trio.
After their successful debut, the trio studied with András Mihály in Budapest, followed by studies with Norbert Brainin (Amadeus Quartet) and Eli Goren (Allegri Quartet).
Grieg Trio's international reputation rests not least on a series of recordings on SIMAX, Virgin Classics and EMI with works by Haydn, Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Schumann, Brahms, Dvorak, Tchaikovsky, Smetana and Shostakovich. But it also rests on their touring in major international venues such as Wigmore Hall, the Châtelet in Paris, Berlin Konzerthaus, Amsterdam's Concertgebouw, Sale Verdi in Milan and New York's Weill Hall at Carnegie Hall.
Grieg Trio has received a number of prizes for its playing. These range from the highly regarded British Parkhouse Award, which opened the way to a series of concerts in London, and 1st Prize at the Colmar International Chamber Music Competition in France in 1989, to the Norwegian Spellemannsprisen for best classical recording (Dvorak piano trios) in 2004. Alongside mastering a large part of the standard piano trio repertoire, Grieg Trio has commissioned, performed and recorded a number of newly written works by leading contemporary composers such as Sir Peter Maxwell Davies, Erkki-Sven Tüür and Lasse Thoresen. From 2004 to 2009 Grieg Trio were the artistic directors of the renowned Stavanger International Chamber Music Festival.
