No music holds such strong ideas of heroism and freedom as Beethoven's Eroica. In the 200th anniversary year of the composer's death, Manfred Honeck conducts the symphony alongside romantic and brand-new sounds inspired by Beethoven. The soloist is the prize-winning Canadian pianist Bruce Liu, who has thrilled music lovers all over the world. Beethoven expanded the reach of music and changed the role of musicians in society - for ever. In 2027 the 200th anniversary of Beethoven's death is marked across Europe, and this evening you can experience his groundbreaking Symphony No. 3 - more powerful, longer and more gripping than any earlier work, and a piece of music that holds ideas of heroism, freedom, perseverance and willpower. One of the DR Symfoniorkestret's highly valued guest conductors, the Viennese conductor Manfred Honeck, returns to Copenhagen to lead Beethoven's Eroica in this concert, side by side with the Estonian composer Jüri Reinvere's tribute to Beethoven, inspired by one of the last sentences the composer wrote in his notebook before his death in 1827. The prize-winning pianist Bruce Liu finally makes his debut with the DR Symfoniorkestret in Rachmaninoff's Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini - a work that combines virtuosity and romantic poetry, with everything from dramatic intensity to lyrical intimacy. Liu is known for interpreting the variations with both technical assurance and deep emotional insight, and he has performed with a number of the world's leading orchestras, so there is reason to look forward to his first meeting with the DR Symfoniorkestret and the master conductor Honeck.
