Description
Before writing his iconic 9th symphony, Ludwig van Beethoven created another colossal work for soloists, choir and orchestra, which was even more groundbreaking. Beethoven's Missa Solemnis gives us a glimpse of divine love. The mass took four years to complete and combines the personal and the spiritual in a way only Beethoven could create. It leads the listener through dramatic musical landscapes - from calm passages to thundering climaxes - as Beethoven exploits every musical possibility to translate his vision of God's greatness into music. Missa Solemnis is notorious for its difficulty and makes demands of musicians and singers at the highest level. The outstanding Czech conductor and DR Symfoniorkestret audience favourite Petr Popelka leads four outstanding soloists and DR Koncertkoret in this performance. Together they bring to life a score known for its intensity, complexity and splendour, and which today does the same as in 1824: reminds us to seek peace in a time of war.
