BEETHOVEN'S 7TH
Dirigent: Molly Turner
,Stella Chen, violin
Description
Molly Turner is described by the Washington Post as “a force of nature on the podium”, and many have discovered that. She has been assistant conductor with orchestras such as the Berliner Philharmoniker, Orchestre de Paris and San Francisco Symphony. The main theme of the concert is intensity. First we hear Bacewicz’s Concerto for String Orchestra, a surging, dynamic rollercoaster ride of powerful rhythms and tense, tonal harmonies. Next comes Beethoven's Violin Concerto, which unites lyrical beauty and intense emotional depth in a work where the soloist moves from heartfelt reflection to radiant power. The soloist is the American Stella Chen, who attracted great attention when she won the Queen Elizabeth International Violin Competition in 2019, and in 2023 she was named Young Artist of the Year by the Gramophone Classical Music Awards. Finally we continue the celebration of Beethoven with his 7th Symphony, called by some “the symphony of dance”. It was a huge hit from its first performance in 1813, perhaps because in the midst of the Napoleonic Wars it was experienced as both triumphant and life-affirming. Duration: approx. 1 hour 50 min incl. interval Programme: G. Bacewicz: Concerto for Strings Beethoven: Violin Concerto L.v. Beethoven: Symphony No. 7
