Description

In the power of the sea and of myth: the music of Debussy, Rachmaninov, Sibelius and Britten overflows with smouldering, untameable emotions and rich colours. “This concert will be a journey - through landscapes, myths and inner worlds. These works bring together youth and experience, myth and reality, darkness and light - and show us that orchestral music is boundless.” - Dmitry Matvienko Debussy's La mer is music that awakens all the senses - the music overflows with colours, moods and sensory impressions. Rachmaninov's music is also painterly - quite literally: the composer recreates Böcklin's painting “Isle of the Dead” in music. In the four interludes from Britten's opera Peter Grimes, the composer paints a deeply felt and nuanced picture of a person's breakdown. The storm inside and outside Peter Grimes's mind is a razor-sharp insight into a tormented human soul. In En saga, Sibelius invites us into a fairytale sound world. The music is lavish and generous - we simply get Sibelius's entire musical character concentrated in a single work. Programme: Jean Sibelius / En Saga Benjamin Britten / “Four Sea Interludes” from Peter Grimes Sergej Rachmaninov / Die Toteninsel Claude Debussy / La mer
