Many different suggestions have been made as to how old Fredericia Musikforening is. It is not as simple to establish as one might think. It depends on what one chooses to define as the founding of the society. Its present function as a chamber music society is in fact the result of a gradual development, reflected in several changes of name over time. It did not begin as a music society at all, but as a singing choir: Den borgerlige Sangforening. It was founded in November 1852. A circle of young craftsmen held the founding meeting in master baker Buhl's premises on the corner of Kirkestræde and Danmarksgade. Each of them paid a deposit of 4 rigsdaler. The choir did not begin its activities until January 1853, however, with 20 members. The rehearsal room was the council chamber, and the conductor was staff horn player Hartmann. The choir's work has occasionally been interrupted - especially by wars - but it has always "like the phoenix risen from its ashes and with renewed strength reclaimed its place as an excellent singing society". It was also a social society, which arranged balls, amateur theatricals and concerts. The latter activity gradually came to dominate more and more. That was the reason why the name was changed in 1909 to Fredericia Sang- og Musikforening and finally in 1925 to Fredericia Musikforening. By this time the choir had ceased to exist.
