Nordic String Quartet
Nordic String Quartet was formed in 2013 and consists of four young string players: Heiðrun Petersen (FO), Mads Haugsted Hansen (DK), Daniel Eklund (SE) and Lea Emilie Brøndal (DK).
In November 2019 the quartet made its debut from the Soloist Class of Det Kongelige Danske Musikkonservatorium, where they have studied with Professor Tim Frederiksen.
Already as students the quartet made its mark on the Danish music scene, and they have since appeared on a number of stages and music festivals both within and beyond the borders of Scandinavia.
In 2018 the quartet began a recording project of Pelle Gudmundsen-Holmgreen's complete string quartets in collaboration with the record label Dacapo. The first CD, with string quartets 1-6, was released in February 2019, and was warmly received and reviewed by, among others, the magazine Klassisk (5 stars), Politikken (4 stars) and Kristeligt Dagblad (5 stars). The CD was named one of the 20 best classical releases of 2019 by Politiken and won the P2 Prize in the category "Album of the year in new classical". Gudmundsen-Holmgreen's string quartets are close to Nordic String Quartet's heart, and it is not uncommon for them to programme one of his works at their concerts.
The complete – and until then entirely unknown – string quartets of the Danish composer Nancy Dalberg were also released in collaboration with Dacapo in 2019. A project that has at last brought the female composer's music properly into the light. The English MusicWeb International has put the CD on its list of "Recording of the year" and this CD is also nominated for the P2 Listeners' Prize 2020 and "classical album of the year".
Together with Messian Quartet Copenhagen, Trio Amerise and Dahlia String Trio, Nordic String Quartet has helped run Østerbro Koncertforening since 2016. A different kind of music society, which builds bridges between different chamber music constellations, and which constantly strives to communicate musical experiences at eye level with the audience.
Nordic String Quartet has a particular fondness for the composers of the Nordic countries, and it is unusual to find a concert where they have not put a Nordic work on the programme. Not only the older, world-famous composers such as Nielsen, Grieg and Sibelius live in their beating quartet hearts, but also more modern composers such as Pelle Gudmundsen-Holmgreen, Hans Abrahamsen and Per Nørgård visit the quartet's rehearsal room. That does not mean the quartet does not love diving into the wonderful music of the German Beethoven, the Russian Shostakovich and the French Ravel – no, as a Nordic quartet they simply feel particularly committed to communicating all the Nordic quartet gold we have up here.
Nordic String Quartet is the recipient of the Music Prize of the Odd Fellow Lodges, the Léonie Sonning Talent Prize and the Carl Nielsen and Anne Marie Carl Nielsen Foundation grant.
